Sound familiar?

You're sore for days after training

The workouts are fine. It's the two days afterward, when stairs feel like a negotiation, that slow you down.

Your joints are stiff in the morning

Knees, shoulders, or lower back take a while to loosen up, and you'd like something to add besides another pill.

Your skin looks tired

Dull tone, fine lines, uneven texture. You're interested in something non-invasive that doesn't involve needles or peeling.

You're always wound up

You go from work to errands to bed without ever really slowing down, and twenty quiet minutes sounds like a plan.

You already do the basics

You eat well, you train, you sleep. You're looking for one more low-effort habit that supports recovery.

You've been paying per session elsewhere

Single sessions add up fast when the research protocols call for several visits a week. Our 5-session pack and $275 unlimited plan make consistency realistic.

Red light therapy is not a cure for any of these. It is a low-risk wellness tool with a growing body of research, and it works best when you use it consistently.

The basics

What is red light therapy?

Red light therapy, also called photobiomodulation or low-level light therapy, exposes the skin to specific wavelengths of red and near-infrared light from LED panels.

Unlike a tanning bed, there is no ultraviolet light involved and the skin does not burn or tan. The light is absorbed by cells in the skin and the tissue beneath it, where researchers believe it supports the way cells produce energy. Different wavelengths reach different depths, which is why the panels we use combine several of them in one session.

The equipment

RedStem RS Max panels

Not all red light devices are comparable. Output, wavelength range, and panel size determine how much light actually reaches you in a session. We chose RedStem's RS Max series, the same line built for clinics and training facilities.

RedStem RS Max red light therapy panel used at Summit Health Clinic

Seven wavelengths

Blue, red, and near-infrared light from 480 to 1064 nm in one panel, so a single session covers skin-level and deeper tissue.

High output

The manufacturer rates the RS Max series at 190 mW/cm² at six inches, which is what keeps sessions to 10 to 20 minutes.

Pulse mode

The panels can deliver light continuously or in pulses from 10 to 597 Hz. Pulsed light is an active area of research.

Medical-grade build

RedStem lists the RS Max series as an FDA Class II device, with CE and RoHS certification.

Specifications are as published by RedStem. FDA classification describes how a device is regulated; it is not a statement that the device treats or cures any condition.

What a visit actually looks like

1

Quick screening on your first visit

We go over your health history, medications, and what you're hoping to get out of it. Some medications and conditions make skin more sensitive to light, so this is where we confirm red light is a reasonable choice for you.

2

Get set up in a private room

You'll expose the area you want treated and put on the eye protection we provide. We position you a short distance from the panel.

3

The session runs 10 to 20 minutes

The light feels gently warm. There is nothing to do but stand or sit still. Most people treat the front and then the back.

4

You're done

No downtime and no recovery period. Most people go straight back to work, the gym, or their day.

Already a Summit Health patient? One red light session a week is included free with your monthly program, and it can be added onto a visit you're already making.

Safety and who it's right for

Generally well tolerated

Red and near-infrared light contains no ultraviolet light and does not tan or burn the skin at normal session lengths. Side effects are uncommon and usually limited to temporary warmth or mild redness.

Eye protection every session

The panels are bright. We provide eye protection and ask that you wear it for the full session, especially when treating the face.

Tell us about these first

Pregnancy, a history of skin cancer, a seizure disorder, an eye condition, or any medication that increases light sensitivity (including some antibiotics, acne medications, and diuretics). We may adjust your sessions or advise against them.

A complement, not a replacement

Red light therapy does not replace medical care. If you have a new or worsening symptom, pain that isn't improving, or a skin lesion that is changing, we'll evaluate that first.

Red light therapy at Summit Health is offered as a wellness service. It is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.

Transparent pricing

Three simple options: pay per visit, save with a 5-session pack, or come as often as you like.

Monthly patients get one session a week, free

Summit Health patients enrolled in a monthly treatment program (medical weight loss, testosterone replacement, hormone therapy, or peptide therapy) can come in for red light therapy once a week at no charge. Ask at your next visit and we will get you on the schedule.

The free weekly session is for patients currently enrolled in a monthly Summit Health treatment program. Monthly patients who want more than one session a week can add the unlimited plan. Red light therapy is generally considered a wellness service and is not typically covered by insurance. Pricing is subject to change.

How often should you come in?

Consistency matters more than session length. Most published protocols use several short sessions a week over a number of weeks.

Getting started

Three to five sessions a week for the first several weeks is a common starting point, which is why we offer an unlimited plan.

Maintenance

Once you've found a rhythm, many people settle at two or three sessions a week.

Monthly patients

Your free weekly session is a simple way to try it and keep it in your routine alongside your program.

Red light pairs naturally with our other services. Patients often combine it with IV hydration on the same visit, or track changes over time with a body composition analysis.

These are general patterns, not a prescription. We'll suggest a schedule based on your goals, and individual results vary.

Common questions about red light therapy

How much does red light therapy cost in Springfield, MO?

At Summit Health, red light therapy is $50 for a single session, $200 for a pack of 5 sessions, or $275 per month for unlimited sessions. Patients currently enrolled in a monthly Summit Health treatment program receive one session per week at no charge.

How long is a red light therapy session?

Sessions run 10 to 20 minutes depending on the area being treated. Most people are in and out of the clinic in under half an hour.

What does it feel like?

Gently warm and bright. It is not painful, and there is nothing you need to do during the session other than stay in position and keep your eye protection on.

How often can I come in?

With the unlimited plan you can schedule as many sessions as you like during clinic hours. Many people start with three to five sessions a week and adjust from there.

What equipment do you use?

We use RedStem RS Max series panels, which combine seven wavelengths of blue, red, and near-infrared light (480, 630, 660, 810, 850, 940, and 1064 nm).

Is red light therapy the same as a tanning bed?

No. Tanning beds use ultraviolet light. Red light therapy uses visible red and invisible near-infrared light, contains no UV, and does not tan or burn the skin at normal session lengths.

Is it safe?

Red light therapy is generally well tolerated, and side effects are uncommon. We screen every patient before a first session because certain medications and conditions can make skin or eyes more sensitive to light.

Who should not use red light therapy?

Tell us before your first session if you are pregnant, have a history of skin cancer, have a seizure disorder or an eye condition, or take a medication that increases light sensitivity. We may adjust your sessions or advise against them.

How soon will I notice anything?

It varies. Some people notice their muscles feel looser the same day. Changes in skin appearance, when they happen, generally take several weeks of consistent sessions. Not everyone responds the same way.

Do I need to be a Summit Health patient?

No. Single sessions, the 5-session pack and the unlimited plan are open to anyone we have screened. If you are already a monthly patient, your free weekly session is included automatically.

Do I need an appointment?

Yes. Sessions are scheduled so the room is ready for you. Call or text (417) 232-3000 or use the contact form to get on the schedule.

Does insurance cover red light therapy?

Generally no. Red light therapy is considered a wellness service and is not typically covered by insurance. Many patients use HSA or FSA funds; check with your plan administrator.
